Free Spirit 

I'm a free spirit, so I'm told

born in a body, caged for a living
free to get shackled to some body's striving
free to fulfill the old body's needs
free to react to other bodies' deeds
free to embody whatever's within reach
free to follow what incarnate idiots preach

I'm a free spirit, it's allegedly dharma
born as a soul in body armour
free to become what my soul suggests
free to respond to her dreams and requests
free to act on my own inner voice
free to refuse alien outer choice
free to live far from prying eyes of plastic
free to die close to wise words of the mystic

I'm a free spirit, it's true what they say
free to lose my own spirit along the way
yet all is not lost because spirit is free
to pursue mares of night
through all shades of twilight 
— against all the odds
— never gives up
— never bows out
— never swears off
— never quits or gives in 
until spirit finds me
